We have been researching different endangered animals and how we can help! Check out the final projects! :) Team Blue Whale! Team Cotton Top Tamarin! Team Gorilla! Team Sea Turtle! Team Polar Bear! Team Rhino!
It seems crazy that we are over halfway through the year! It surely is flying by!
Here are a few upcoming dates to add to your calendar!
We have been hard at work in our class! Here's whats going on:
TEAM BUCK! I need to brag about my class for a moment because last week they did something that blew me away! Buck's Bucks is my classroom management system. It is individualized, and students use their money to buy individual rewards. Last week though, a group of boys decided to combine their money to earn a reward for the entire class. After they did that, it started a trend and every single student in my class pitched in some money to get a couple more whole-class rewards. I am so proud of the collaboration and hardworking students in my classroom. :) Have a fantastic month everybody! I will be sending home information about our Valentine's Day party soon! As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me! ~ Miss Buck I feel like I say this every month, but I cannot believe we are entering November already! The first couple of months of school have flown by! As we enter November, please keep these important dates in mind:
This month has been busy with all kinds of learning and fun activities! MATH - We have been working on multiplication and division! We have focused on strategies for solving problems, as well as learning the properties of multiplication (commutative, associative, distributive.) We made multiplication monsters as a little celebration to end out unit! Our next unit will be on collecting data and graphing. READING - In reading we have been working on summarizing stories and still practicing restating the question. We use the format -somebody - wanted - but - so - then - to summarize our stories. We are also starting our first book clubs this month! WRITING - We are finishing our first unit on narrative writing. We have been in the publishing phase, and will be doing a share next week. I'm really impressed with the revision and editing I have seen! SOCIAL STUDIES - In social studies we are learning about government. We have read a couple of stories about voting, and now we are learning about the branches of government. Here's the little chart the class helped me create. SCIENCE - We have been learning about social and group behavior. We have done a couple of activities that help explain why some animals might travel and live in groups, as opposed to alone. It has been a really fun unit! Next, we are learning about inheritance of traits. We also had a little lesson on fire safety this month. We got to explore a fire truck, and talked about finding safe routes out of our houses. Here are some pictures from that day! And finally, CDS is doing a little school spirit month for the next few Wednesdays. Last week we wore mismatched socks to celebrate our individuality! Have a fantastic November everybody! :)
~Miss Buck I honestly cannot believe we are already into October! We have had such a spectacular first month of school! I have seen so much improvement already! Here's a quick update on our classroom! Important Dates:
MATH: In math we just finished our first unit on place value and addition. Your children did a great job on this unit. Next we are going to be working on multiplication strategies and skip counting! WRITING: For our first few writing lessons, we just free wrote about anything to build stamina. Now we are working on small moment stories and writing personal narratives. I love the stories I am reading! READING: In reading we studied nonfiction text features! We've learned how to restate a question and find evidence by highlighting. Everybody has been doing an awesome job! SOCIAL STUDIES: We have studied maps in social studies! We've mastered the oceans and continents, as well as learned a little bit about Maine's geography. NEXT THURSDAY (10/5/17) we will have an assessment over the continents, oceans, and a little bit about Maine. I will be sending a study guide home on Monday. SCIENCE: In science we studied life cycles! We grew different kinds of seeds with different conditions. Some had no soil, and some had no light! Our class took a poll of our hypotheses. 11 students didn't think the plants with no light would grow. 8 didn't think that the plants with no soil would grow. I think students were pretty surprised when all of our plants grew very well! Here is a picture! I'm excited for the year to continue! Please continue to practice mastering math facts with your children!
As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please let me know! Happy October! :) ~Miss Buck Here's our first group picture! We'll work on spacing as the year goes on! :) I am so impressed with your children! We had such an amazing first couple weeks of school! Thank you for sharing them with me! We have such a great group, so I am looking forward to an amazing year ahead of us! Here are some pictures of our class! :) Also thank you so much to those who donated items or brought gifts to my classroom during open house and the first few days of school. I am very appreciative!
Some Reminders: Snack - We have one snack time a day in the morning. Because our classroom is so far away from the vending machine, I will not allow students to use the vending machines to go get snacks. Please pack a snack from home. Water Bottles - I have made a water bottle station in our classroom. Students may bring a water bottle from home and fill it up in the morning. This is to avoid traffic to the water fountain. I will send the water bottles home on Fridays so they can be washed and returned on the following Monday. Homework – This week (September 11) will be the first week of homework!!! Each week I will send home a reading log. Students need to read for 20 minutes at least five nights a week. A parent will need to initial the log for each night of reading. Homework will be due on Mondays so you can also read on the weekends if you have busy weeks! I encourage you to practice math facts and spelling words (once we start having tests) often. Most weeks I will give a math paper or writing assignment to students. PLEASE know that if this assignment takes your student longer than 20 minutes, DO NOT make your child continue to work on it. Write me a note, and I will reteach the concepts to your child. I do not want them to stress or hate school because the homework is too hard. Can't wait for an amazing year!!!!!!! ~Miss Buck Hello Everybody!
It is that time of year again...SCHOOL IS STARTING! I am so excited to meet your children and have an amazing year together! I can't wait to see you all tonight at our Open House from 6:00 to 7:00! And then I am so excited for our first day of school on Wednesday! See you soon! :) Love, Miss Buck |
