I honestly cannot believe we are already into October! We have had such a spectacular first month of school! I have seen so much improvement already! Here's a quick update on our classroom! Important Dates:
MATH: In math we just finished our first unit on place value and addition. Your children did a great job on this unit. Next we are going to be working on multiplication strategies and skip counting! WRITING: For our first few writing lessons, we just free wrote about anything to build stamina. Now we are working on small moment stories and writing personal narratives. I love the stories I am reading! READING: In reading we studied nonfiction text features! We've learned how to restate a question and find evidence by highlighting. Everybody has been doing an awesome job! SOCIAL STUDIES: We have studied maps in social studies! We've mastered the oceans and continents, as well as learned a little bit about Maine's geography. NEXT THURSDAY (10/5/17) we will have an assessment over the continents, oceans, and a little bit about Maine. I will be sending a study guide home on Monday. SCIENCE: In science we studied life cycles! We grew different kinds of seeds with different conditions. Some had no soil, and some had no light! Our class took a poll of our hypotheses. 11 students didn't think the plants with no light would grow. 8 didn't think that the plants with no soil would grow. I think students were pretty surprised when all of our plants grew very well! Here is a picture! I'm excited for the year to continue! Please continue to practice mastering math facts with your children!
As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please let me know! Happy October! :) ~Miss Buck

Here's our first group picture! We'll work on spacing as the year goes on! :) I am so impressed with your children! We had such an amazing first couple weeks of school! Thank you for sharing them with me! We have such a great group, so I am looking forward to an amazing year ahead of us! Here are some pictures of our class! :) Also thank you so much to those who donated items or brought gifts to my classroom during open house and the first few days of school. I am very appreciative!
Some Reminders: Snack - We have one snack time a day in the morning. Because our classroom is so far away from the vending machine, I will not allow students to use the vending machines to go get snacks. Please pack a snack from home. Water Bottles - I have made a water bottle station in our classroom. Students may bring a water bottle from home and fill it up in the morning. This is to avoid traffic to the water fountain. I will send the water bottles home on Fridays so they can be washed and returned on the following Monday. Homework – This week (September 11) will be the first week of homework!!! Each week I will send home a reading log. Students need to read for 20 minutes at least five nights a week. A parent will need to initial the log for each night of reading. Homework will be due on Mondays so you can also read on the weekends if you have busy weeks! I encourage you to practice math facts and spelling words (once we start having tests) often. Most weeks I will give a math paper or writing assignment to students. PLEASE know that if this assignment takes your student longer than 20 minutes, DO NOT make your child continue to work on it. Write me a note, and I will reteach the concepts to your child. I do not want them to stress or hate school because the homework is too hard. Can't wait for an amazing year!!!!!!! ~Miss Buck |
